Welcome to Martel – The Best College Ever!
Dear Martelians,
We are the Magisters of Martel College and look forward to getting to know all of you!
We met as graduate students in North Carolina a long while ago, and have lived in Mexico City, Barcelona,
and Berlin since then. Before moving to Houston in 2025, however, we called St. Louis home for over two
decades. This is all to say that we had to get used to frequent moves, to packing and unpacking homes, and to
making new friends and saying good-bye to others. These moves have taught us to greatly value supportive
and welcoming communities, and we hope to make you feel right at home at Martel. There will be amazing
days, and there will be challenging days, and we look forward to sharing all these experiences with you.
Tabea was born in Germany, raised in Spain and came to the US for college. As a professor in Modern and
Classical Languages and Literatures she teaches Spanish and Latin American literature and film as well as
other Humanities courses. She is currently writing Agents’ Secrets, a book on the lives of women spies. In her
free time, she likes to practice outdoor yoga in all kinds of weather, draw and paint, and take naps (not
necessarily in that order). Guillermo was born and raised in multiple cities in Mexico, and is in the
Department of Political Science at Rice. He likes chess, soccer, and violin, and keeps failing at doing any of
those things with grace, but he makes up for it with enthusiasm.
As empty nesters, we love it when our kids Emilio and Aitana visit us, and we hope they will do so often
during our years at Martel. And then there is our dog Houdini, who became part of the family in the summer
of 2020. True to his name, he once was an escape artist, but nowadays he is more interested in belly rubs
than in running away. If you see us walking him around campus, you will notice that he is as happy about
being at Martel and meeting you as we are!
